No trip to Machu Picchu is complete without a stop in this stunning example of Inca architecture

Machu Picchu has held the world’s attention since its rediscovery by Hiram Bingham in 1911, but just as astounding as the Lost City of the Incas are the ancient ruins and villages that dot the landscape throughout the Sacred Valley.

Located approximately 60 km from Cusco, Ollantaytambo is a regular stop on the Sacred Valley Tour which is easily accessed by bus or train. While the majority of visitors stop there on the same day as Pisac and Chinchero, Ollantaytambo is a historic Inca town that warrants a day all its own.

Historic Town of Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo is a charming town that dates back to Inca times. Built at the base of the old Inca town (now the magnificent ruins), it is believed to be one of the best examples of what an Inca town would really have been like in its heyday. A grid of cobblestone streets contains many of the original stone structures that date back centuries (with a few upgrades and modifications). A nice selection of restaurants and sleeping accommodations are available for visitors who wish to extend their stay. Those who do so will have the advantage of meandering the streets and hiking the ruins in relative peace before the busloads of tourists arrive in the afternoons.

A small local museum is worth a visit for those interested in learning more about the archeology and history of the area.

Ancient Peruvian Ruins

What visitors will most likely first notice upon arrival at the ancient town are the formidable stone structures located on steep slopes above the village. The archeological site, which includes striking agricultural terraces, was at one time both a fortress and a temple, and rises out of the side of a mountain so steep it looks like the ruins could slide right off.

Hiking to the upper section of the ruins after a 200-step climb will offer visitors spectacular views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains and the village below. The air is thin at the high altitude so take it slow.

As visitors wander the ruins, they admire the typically magnificent Inca masonry that has withstood battles of nature and man for hundreds of years.

With the incredible beauty and history of Machu Picchu at the forefront of most visitors’ minds, the rest of the Sacred Valley of the Incas is sometimes forgotten, but the examples of Inca architecture that exist throughout the area are just as impressive.

Ollantaytambo is full of wonders both natural and man-made. It is rich with history and culture. While tourists often make it a quick stop as part of the Sacred Valley tour, there’s enough to see to warrant at least half a day or more. Set aside some time for this historic city – it’s well worth it.
